Job Summary

This position is responsible for the investigation, planning, and execution of injection molding and/ or extrusion related projects. Said projects may include process improvements, insourcing of existing components, product improvements, etc. Often considered the subject matter expert in their field, they must possess a thorough understanding of their engineering discipline. It is expected that the Senior Engineer I would stay current on emerging technology and trends in industry so as to enable implementation of “state of the art” systems. 

Job Details/Responsibilities

  • Responsible for the design, development, and qualification of efficient, robust Injection Molding and/ or Extrusion processes and equipment.
  • Ensure all work and documentation is compliant with existing internal procedures and relevant external regulatory requirements. 
  • Provide support in cost and capacity modeling as well as resource planning estimates for project assignments.
  • Manage suppliers of molds and equipment to ensure established timelines, budgets and performance requirements are met.
  • Manage small projects whose primary objectives are based in Injection Molding and/ or Extrusion.
  • Identify areas of potential improvement in existing processes and build rationale to support their implementation.
  • Present technical information to target audiences in a clear, concise and professional manner, in order to gain understanding and/ or consensus.
  • Maintain positive relations with suppliers, contractors and all levels of associates. 
  • Performs other job-related duties assigned.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities (KSA)

  • Ability to specify, procure, install and validate IM and/ or Extrusion equipment and processes
  • Ability to manage internal and external suppliers
  • Understanding and application of statistical experimental design and analysis techniques, Statistical Process Control (SPC), Six Sigma principals, problem solving and decision-making tools.
  • Effective communication skills, both verbal and written. 
  • Thorough understanding and application of scientifically based injection molding and/ or extrusion process development.
  • Ability to create technical reports and documentation suitable for inclusion in submissions to notified bodies
  • Thorough understanding of engineering drawings and tolerancing
  • Use and understanding of computer aided drafting systems, Solidworks preferred
  • In depth understanding of mold design and tooling and/ or extrusion tooling design 

Qualifications/ Background Experiences

 

  • Typically requires a BS in Plastics Engineering or other relevant discipline 
  • Minimum 10 years of increasing responsibility/experience in injection molding and/or extrusion engineering  
  • Experience with manufacturing equipment design, procurement and validation
  • Experience in injection molding/ extrusion for medical devices or other highly regulated industry
