Job Summary
The primary role of the Automation Technician is to provide competent and effective automation and controls support to plant operations or suppliers facilities. The ability to perform work safely, meet the needs of Operations, execute the maintenance program, and comply with all safety codes is paramount. The Sr. Automation Technician must identify, troubleshoot, and repair problems in automation, instrumentation and controls systems that occur in production equipment and processes. Must be able to run tests, isolate problems, replace faulty devices. Performs preventive maintenance and calibration of plant instrumentation and controls systems. Provide technical knowledge support to lower-level technicians.
Job Details/Responsibilities
- Design and implement hardware/software integration solutions for facility automation systems to improve equipment performance, reduce downtime, and support manufacturing scalability.
- Install, test, and commission electrical components, wiring systems, and automation controls to ensure systems operate safely, efficiently, and in compliance with electrical codes and safety regulations.
- Interpret and generate detailed technical drawings—including wiring diagrams, circuit board assembly diagrams, ladder logic, and P&ID diagrams—to support equipment installation, repair, and upgrades.
- Troubleshoot and evaluate automated systems and control equipment by applying diagnostic tools and root cause analysis techniques to ensure optimal operation and minimal disruption to production.
- Support the design, fabrication, and startup of new automated equipment by collaborating with engineers and technical teams during the build and commissioning phases
- Create and maintain visual aids, standard operating procedures (SOPs), and documentation for preventive maintenance, troubleshooting, and repair tasks to ensure knowledge transfer and technician training.
- Provide technical support during Factory Acceptance Testing (FAT), Site Acceptance Testing (SAT), and equipment validation activities to ensure systems meet user requirements and regulatory standards.
- Provide guidance and mentorship to facilities technicians and staff, promoting best practices, emerging technologies, and continuous improvement initiatives related to automation systems. Actively contribute to a positive and collaborative work environment by encouraging open communication, teamwork, and a commitment to operational excellence. Participate in cross-functional teams to support facility upgrades, technology transitions, and other strategic initiatives. Additional duties may be assigned as needed to support departmental and organizational goals.

Working Conditions/Physical Requirements
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities (KSA)
- Comprehensive understanding of assembly drawings, electrical schematics, technical instructions, and testing procedures.
- Solid foundational knowledge of basic and industrial electrical power systems.
- Familiarity with robotic systems, including SCARA and 6-axis robots, with emphasis on basic programming and troubleshooting.
- Working knowledge of machine vision systems such as Cognex, Keyence, and Omron.
- Advanced knowledge of industrial control systems, including PLCs, HMIs, VFDs, servos, sensors, and instrumentation.
- Understanding of data network infrastructure, including switches, routers, and servers.
- Knowledge of CMMS (Computerized Maintenance Management System) platforms and maintenance documentation protocols.
- Awareness of machine functions, system integration, and automation equipment operation.
- Proficient in reading and interpreting technical documentation such as assembly and schematic diagrams.
- Demonstrated competence in the use of MS Office tools (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Visio) for documentation, reporting, and presentations.
- Skilled in using computers and control systems to program equipment, input data, and configure automation hardware/software.
- Effective verbal and written communication skills, including the ability to document findings, share technical details, and collaborate across departments.
- Strong analytical and diagnostic skills used to evaluate complex systems and identify optimal solutions.
- Skilled in troubleshooting and programming industrial automation components and vision systems.
- Experienced in safe and accurate installation and testing of electrical components and wiring systems.
- Competent in the use of CMMS for updating maintenance records and logging activities.
- Basic knowledge of English and Spanish, with clear communication in both languages.
- Ability to independently analyze technical problems and apply logical solutions in a fast-paced environment.
- Capable of performing hands-on tasks involving electro-mechanical systems with precision and attention to detail.
- Able to convey information clearly and effectively across different communication platforms (email, in-person, phone).
- Demonstrates strong manual dexterity and mechanical aptitude for physical troubleshooting and repair tasks.
Ability to manage multiple tasks, prioritize responsibilities, and meet project deadlines. - Willingness and ability to travel as needed to support remote facilities or vendor sites.
- Physically able to work in an onsite manufacturing environment with no remote work flexibility
Qualifications/ Background Experiences
- Minimum: Associate degree in Electronics, Industrial Maintenance, Mechatronics, or a related technical field.
- Preferred: Bachelor’s degree in Mechatronics, Electronics Engineering, or a related discipline.
Experience:
- Minimum of 9 years of hands-on experience in automation, equipment fabrication, integration, or industrial equipment maintenance with an associate degree.
- Minimum of 7 years of relevant experience with a bachelor’s degree.
- Experience must include working with automated systems in a manufacturing or industrial setting, preferably in a regulated industry such as medical devices, pharmaceuticals, or aerospace.
Preferred Expertise:
- Demonstrated experience in the installation, programming, and troubleshooting of PLCs, HMIs, vision systems, and robotic systems (SCARA, 6-axis).
- Strong background in interpreting schematics, wiring diagrams, and technical documentation.
- Familiarity with industrial safety standards and regulatory requirements (e.g., FDA, ISO, OSHA).
- CMMS proficiency and knowledge of networked control systems is highly desirable.
- Certifications in industrial automation, robotics, or electrical systems are a plus (e.g., Rockwell Automation, Siemens, ISA).
